Battle Proven Facts of Life

  1. You are not Superman.
  2. Recoiless rifles – aren’t.
  3. Suppressive fires – don’t.
  4. Automatic weapons – aren’t.
  5. Friendly fire – isn’t.
  6. Tracers work both ways.
  7. If it’s stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid.
  8. Don’t look conspicuous, it draws fire.
  9. Never draw fire, it irritates everyone around you.
  10. Anything you do can get you shot, including nothing.
  11. Try to look unimportant, they may be low on ammunition.
  12. When in doubt, empty the magazine.
  13. Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are.
  14. Your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
  15. If your attack is going really well, it’s an ambush.
  16. If you can’t remember, the claymore is pointed toward you.
  17. All five-second grenade fuses are three seconds.
  18. If you are forward of your position, the artillery will be short.
  19. The enemy diversion you are ignoring is the main attack.
  20. The easy way is always mined.
  21. The important things are simple.
  22. The simple things are very hard.
  23. If you are short of everything except enemy, you are in combat.
  24. No OPLAN (operations plan) survives contact intact.
  25. When you have secured the area, don’t forget to tell the enemy.
  26. Incoming fire has right-of-way.
  27. No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection.
  28. No inspection ready unit has every passed combat.
  29. Teamwork is essential, it gives them other people to shoot at.
  30. If the enemy is in range, so are you.
  31. The enemy invariably attacks on onlyl two occasions – when you’re ready for them and when you’re not.
  32. A sucking chest wound is nature’s way of telling you to slow down.
  33. Make it too tough for the enemy to get in and you can’t get out.
  34. The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly.
  35. Radios will fail as soon as you desperately need fire support.
  36. If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will have more than your fair share to take.
  37. Both sides are convinced they are about to lose – they’re both right.
  38. Professionals are predictable, but the world is so full of amateurs.

I found this among some of my military paperwork. I don’t remember where I originally found these but I’m sure most veterans can appreciate them.
