Lent 2016

Today is Ash Wednesday and, for many Christians, the beginning of the Lenten season, a period in which people traditionally give up some vice until Easter. For many of those who give up something for Lent it will be something trivial such as chocolate, sweets, alcohol, or swearing.. I’d like to suggest maybe giving up something that might actually make a difference. Why don’t people give up hate, bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, killing, and being ignorant. Between now and Easter Sunday, how about it if you all stop being assholes and encourage all of your friends to give up being assholes.

It doesn’t have to stop when Lent is over, you can continue to not be an asshole. You might become a better person for it and if enough people stop being assholes, the world might actually start becoming a better place.

  1. Officially I don’t observe Lent although I like the idea of it. I suspect that for Jesus his 40 days of Lent was a period of fasting and meditation. It’s said that he was tempted by the Devil but 40 days of solitude, fasting and meditation will bring every personal demon you can imagine to the surface where you can deal with them and conquer them. Our demons, devils and Satans are all part of the maya or illusion we experience in living in the temporal world of name and form.
