Personally, I think it is rather arrogant of the human race to believe that we are they only intellegent lifeforms in the universe. On the other hand, any other tntelligent lifeforms out there have to deal with the same laws of physics as we do. If any of these other intelligent lifeforms should somehow overcome this limiations they would obviously be technologically superior to us.
With that in mind, should we be eager to meet such beings? Our own experience on this planet in encountering civilizations and cultures possessing less advanced the technology has not been spectaclular. What invaribly happens is that the more technologically advanced culture conquers, enslaves, annihilates or otherwise brings the inferior culture to the brink of extinction. Even those from the “superior culture” possessing noble and honest intentions (i.e., missionaries) invaribly have done more harm than good. This has not been limited to our days of European imperialism but continue to the present day.
Who’s to say that a technologically superior culture from a distant planet would not do the same to us? Perhaps they might have evolved beyond that stage but do we really want to take that chance? The words, “We are from another planet and we are here to help you” should raise a red flag.
