Here’s an interesting item, “Who is the Eastre Rabbit?”. It explains the origins of the association of rabbits and eggs with our Easter celebrations. Like other “Christian” holidays, it was hi-jacked by the Church in order to convert the indigenous pagans to Christianity. Essentially, the Church allowed them to keep their fertility festival but added Jesus, the crucifixion, and the resurrection to it.

The pagan origins of Easter explain why Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox instead of in conjunction with the Jewish Passover. I believe the Passover has more relevance to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus than pagan fertility rites but the pagans had to be converted and that was more important than historical or theological accuracy.
