Western Civilization, an oxymoron?

Dobie Gray – Drift Away

Today’s Quote: “I should love to satisfy all, if I possibly can; but in trying to satisfy all, I may be able to satisfy none. I have, therefore, arrived at the conclusion that the best course is to satisfy one’s own conscience and leave the world to form its own judgment, favorable or otherwise.” — Mohandas K. Gandhi

I finally watched The Last Samurai in English. I saw it on AMC. It was actually better in Spanish. It wasn’t too bad but I’m glad I didn’t spend money to see it in the theater. Let’s face it, Tom Cruise just isn’t that good.

I saw it as a movie about the end of a way of life that revolved around discipline and honor. There isn’t enough of either in the world today. I found it interesting that the “American” became civilized and learned honor. We’re not as civilized or honorable as we’d like to believe.

Music Trivia Answers:
1. B) On the ceiling [When this was recorded, there was no Dawn. A group called Hot Buttered Soul sang backup with Thelma Hopkins sitting in for one of their regular singers. She ended up joining Orlando, and along with Joyce Vincent, they started recording as “Tony Orlando And Dawn.” The group was named after Stacy Dawn Siegal, daughter of Tokens member Jay Siegal. 2. C) The Eagles [“Colitas,” in the line “Warm smell of colitas,” is often interpreted as a flower or a sexual reference. It is a Spanish word translated to Henley by The Eagles Mexican-American road manager meaning “Little Buds,” and is a reference to marijuana. The line “They stab it with their steely knives but they just can’t kill the beast” is a reference to Steely Dan. They shared the same manager and had a friendly rivalry. The year before, Steely Dan included the line “Turn up The Eagles, the neighbors are listening” on the song Everything You Did. The lyrics for this came with the album. Some people thought the line “She’s got the Mercedes Bends” was a misspelling of “Mercedes Benz,” and wrote Henley to complain. The line was a play on words. (Songfacts.com)]
3. A) Nightswimming [The song tells stories about when the band members and their friends used to go skinny dipping in Athens, Georgia. (Songfacts.com)]
4. B) Landslide [This is about a father-daughter relationship. Stevie wrote it on the guitar in about 5 minutes in Aspen, Colorado. She was surrounded by mountains and thinking, ‘Wow, all this snow could just come tumbling down around me and there is nothing I can do about it.’ When she feels like this she just goes to a room and writes her thoughts down so she can read it and ponder what she has written. (Songfacts.com)]
5. A) New York [If Paul Simon ever hinted at a breakup with Art Garfunkel before, this song all but proves it with the line, “Tom get your plane right on time. I know that your eager to fly now.” Before the folk duo became famous, they were known as Tom and Jerry. Tom was Art’s stage name, so this line symbolizes their increasing need for musical and personal freedom. Garfunkel (Tom) was trying to kick off an acting career and was missing a lot of recording dates with Simon in order to film Carnal Knowledge. Simon and Garfunkel split up after this album (Bridge Over Troubled Water) was released. (Songfacts.com)]

I can take credit for knowing 1, 2, and 5. I suppose I should have known the Fleetwood Mac question. Oh, well. (Hey, that’s a Fleetwood Mac song!)
