Still adrift in the Red Sea, out of sight of land

The Asylum Street Spankers – The Scrotum Song

Today’s Quote: “Maybe this world is another planet’s Hell.” — Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

15 minutes before quitting time on Friday…
and some dickweed department manager comes in and says, “Oh, by the way, I have a new employee starting Monday morning. Since you folks in Information Technology don’t have lives, could you reformat the computer of the person she’s replacing and set it up for her?” Yeah, sure, why not? I haven’t eaten a damned thing all day because I’ve been busting my ass just to get caught up with last week. Can’t get a freaking IP address to download an image, then I can’t get any other NIC to even work in the machine. The Ghost image on my USB drive is corrupted or something. Now I’m loading 2000 the old fashioned way. I’m sure that somewhere along the line, the machine won’t be able to read the CD or something equally bizarre. At that point I may have to be restrained to keep from tossing the computer across the parking lot onto I-75. It’s just too much bother for a 500 MHz piece of shit. But the finance department is too cheap to allocate capital funds to upgrade computers for their own workers. So I’ll probably be here in my tiny, claustrophobic cubicle until at least 7 o’clock. Not that anybody here will be the least bit grateful for it.

Music Trivia Answers:
1. B) The Lovin’ Spoonful [Do You Believe in Magic was written by John Sebastian, who formed The Lovin’ Spoonful with his friend, Zal Yanovsky. Sebastian and Yanovsky were in a group called The Mugwumps, and made a name for themselves playing clubs in Greenwich Village. When the other Mugwumps – Mama Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty – moved to California and formed The Mamas And The Papas, they formed the band and Sebastian began focusing on songwriting. The Lovin’ Spoonful started playing electric instruments to get away from the folk music sound and attract a younger contemporary rock audience. In 1976, Sebastian wrote the theme song to the TV show Welcome Back Kotter, which was a #1 hit. (]

  1. POS Update
As predicted, I didn’t leave until after 7 and that computer still isn’t set up. It hung up somewhere late in the Windows 2000 installation. I was able to connect to the network and access my mapped drives but I was unable to run batch files or programs from them. They didn’t see the C: drive as a valid drive. WTF? I moved the NIC to another PCI slot and tried to Ghost the image from the network again. This time I was able to get an IP address but Ghost puked in the middle of the download. By this time it was almost 7 and I decided I’d already spent too much time on this 500 MHz piece of shit. I wondered if the 550 image was any good. It’s the same motherboard and chipset. Maybe I’ll be a fool and run down there tomorrow and try it. Then again, maybe not.

    1. Re: POS Update
Since I quite obviously can’t afford to make any unnecessry trips until I get paid again and I can rest assured that I will not be reimbursed for the trip, I will not be making a trip to the office to give that 500 MHz POS another attempt at an operating system this weekend. It will just have wait until Monday. Sorry about that but that’s the chance you take when you make the requirement known at the last minute.
